Top Breweries in Langley

The Langley Township and Langley City are quickly becoming a craft beer mecca, between the Kwantlen Brewing Program, six commercial breweries (and 7th opening soon).

5 Roads Brewing

5 Roads Brewing launched in 2019 about a block from Trading Post’s brewery. There is no patio, but the tasting room is modern and welcoming. Unlike a lot of craft breweries, the bar seating is front and center; payment is taken on the side, creating a very social environment for the singles bellied up to the bar. There are large long group tables to accomadate you and all your drinking buddies.  

5 Roads tasting room has a TV, unlike most craft breweries in the Fraser Valley. They have relatively good food, although limited offerings; you can go here and have a meal without feeling like you need to hit a drive-thru on the way home. The personal-sized pizzas are very good value at $13 to $15.  Overall 5 Roads a pretty good place to watch the big game if you don’t want to get stuck with a choice between a bunch of yellow lagers at your local chain sports bar.

The beers are well crafted and varied. I have yet to find my “go to” beer at 5 Roads, but I have never had something that I didn’t like there.

Camp Beer Co

Camp Beer Co is one of the Fraser Valley’s newest breweries. Founded by Kevin Larsen, avid homebrewer Dave Henry.

I originally met Dave Henry while working at BosaGrape Homebrew Supply Store. He was easily our best mail-order homebrew customer.  Dave later founded the Langley’s Full Barrel Homebrew Club and lead the club winning the Best Amateur beer at the Tri-Cities Pro-Am Cask Festival. 

Camp Beer Co is a little hard to find because they don’t really face the road, nor do they face the popular Langley Townhall Public House, but look closely on the Southside of the building for a large welcoming patio. Inside the Camp tasting rooms has a cozy fireside area to keep you and your friends warm.

Dead Frog Brewery

Dead Frog is known for funky branding and even funkier beers. They moved from a remote Aldergrove industrial park to a large commercial space at the corner of 200th and 88th just off Highway 1. The bar offers 25 beers on tap (some hits; some misses), so there is sure to be something for everyone. 

The tasting room features long tables creating a very social space; great for meeting local craft beer lovers. Although the food offerings got off to a rough start, the kitchen has stepped up its game, and there are lots of great shareable menu items such as nachos, wings, and charcuterie boards. 

Dead Frog is owned and operated by Langley’s Donna and Derrick Smith.  After 10 years of operating a Ubrew called Backwoods Brewing in Aldergrove (I think it is now called the Copper Kettle UBrew) the Smith founded Dead Frog Brewing in 2007.  Since then the long ginger bearded son Cole Smith and Kwantlen Brewing Alumnus has taken over as head brewer.

Best time to visit: With easy access to Hwy 1 and the Golden Ears bridge, Dead Frog is a great place to meet your friends from outside of Langley before continuing your adventure.

Farm Country Brewing

Farm Country Brewing is Langley City’s only commercial brewery.  Located the Value Village parking lot in one of Langley City’s many defunct thrift stores.  The seating area and brewing area are very large; clearly built with growth in mind. 

Seasoned Brewmaster, Jack, came from Main Street Brewing and Russell Brewing before helping to launch Farm Country. He has brewed some very well crafted clean beers. When I go to a new brewery I always start with a light lager like a pilsner because they are very hard to hide flaws and I am happy to report that Jack’s pilsner is very well brewed.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University Brewing School

Kwantlen Polytechnic University houses a brewing school at the Langley Campus. Unlike the discount haircuts you use to get a the local community college, Kwantlen staff and students are brewing some great beers, and even won the 2019 BC Brewery Award.  

Kwantlen is primarily a teaching brewery but is open on Friday afternoons between 1 pm and 6 pm to the public for free samples and growler sales.  There are normally four rotating beers available and because they brew such small batches there is normally at least a few new beers each week. Growler fills are only $10 (taxes in) which is probably the cheapest growler fills in Metro Vancouver.

Locality Brewing

Locality Brewing is one of six farm-based breweries in BC. They grow and malt their own barley, wheat, rye. Plus produce hops, honey, and berries for brewing. Although there are many wineries in the Lower Mainland, it is very hard to grow a significant portion of your brewing ingredients in this climate. But Locality has done an excellent job producing field-to-glass beers that truly show off the Langley “terroir”.

The brewery is in a rural area of Langley that can be a little tricky to find, but it is well worth the drive. There is no tasting room, but there is a large picnic area with propane fireplaces and a view overlooking a pond.

Smugglers Trail

Located in North Langley’s Walnut Grove neighborhood, Smuggler’s Trail has a beautiful brewery tasting room with the best brewery food menu in Langley. The food menu features pizzas, gastro pub-style burgers, and a five-item poutine menu.

Trading Post Brewing

Trading Post Brewing was not the first brewery in Langley, but it was the first to have a tasting room, and offer a modern craft beer experience. The brewing is done at #107 20120 64th ave in Langley, but there are Trading Post restaurants in Fort Langley and Abbotsford. The brewery and tasting room is decorated with exposed wood beams and historical Langley decor. There is a weekly cask on Thursdays and live music on most Fridays.

Trading Post was founded by Fort Langley resident and Trinity Western University Alumnus Lance Verhoeff and his father Paul, with craft brewing veteran Tony Dewald that the helm as the Brewmaster. Since launching Trading Post Brewing and the restaurants, the Verhoeff’s have also organized the Fort Langley Beer Festival and the SummerSet Music Festival.
